5 Gentle Foot Stretches for Better Morning Circulation

Waking up with stiff or cold feet is a common complaint, especially as we age. Maintaining flexibility and promoting good blood flow to your extremities can help you start your day with more energy and less discomfort.

Before jumping out of bed, taking just five minutes to perform these simple, low-impact stretches can make a significant difference in how your feet feel throughout the day.

1. The Ankle Pump
While lying on your back, simply point your toes away from you, then flex them back towards your shins. Repeat this motion slowly 15 times for each foot to awaken the calf muscles.
2. Toe Curls
Imagine you are picking up a towel from the floor with your toes. Curl them tightly for 3 seconds, then spread them as wide as you can. Do this 10 times to engage the small muscles in the arches.
3. The Tennis Ball Roll
Sit on the edge of your bed and place a tennis ball under the sole of your foot. Gently roll it back and forth from your heel to the ball of your foot for 2 minutes. This provides a gentle massage to the plantar fascia.
4. Heel Raises
Stand up holding onto a wall or sturdy chair for balance. Slowly rise up onto your tiptoes, hold for 2 seconds, and lower back down. Repeat 15 times to stimulate blood flow in the lower legs.
5. Seated Calf Stretch
Sit on the floor with your legs extended. Loop a towel around the ball of one foot and gently pull towards you until you feel a stretch in your calf. Hold for 30 seconds and switch sides.
